Alphabe-Thursday

I'm going to apologize for this up front no pun intended ;-)  for the letter X, I chose XYZ.  When I originally wrote this, I figured this started with an X.  After seeing it again, I think this might be stretching it but I'm sticking to it anyhow lol.

I had never heard of this but apparently XYZ  is slang to let someone know their zipper is down.  It stands for   (e)xamine your zipper.  I asked my husband if he ever heard of it but he hadn't.  Have you?

Here's the link I got it from
Check out Jenny's to see what others came up with for X, maybe someone else will use XYZ too.  You never know.  http://jennymatlock.blogspot.com/2010/06/alphabe-thursday-x.html

P.S.  Also Debbie at  debbiedoos has entered a contest to try to get a host job on Oprah's new network.  When you get a change go over and look at her video and vote for her.  She needs a lot of votes.  You can vote more than once.  I'm not sure how long the voting is so don't wait  ;-)  Thanks.

Stormy Weather

We had a big storm Sunday evening.  The winds were 60 to 70 miles an hour.  When we went to see Mom on Monday, we saw some trees that were down.  One we saw a tree cracked a pole.  It was nasty.  Luckily, we only had a small limb fall down.

But why, oh why, couldn't the wind have taken down this dead branch that's too high for us to get  ;-)

Cream anyone??

When we were getting rid of stuff from my Mom's house, she kept asking if we took her creamer. I don't know where it came from but obviously, she cared a lot about it. So, I brought it home with me.

Donald Duck arrested

This was just too crazy not to post right away. What's weirder the crime or that his name is Donald Duck.  I bet who ever wrote this story was LOL.    Please click on the link..

PSA - How not to accidentally kill yourself

Most people probably wouldn't admit to this but just in case someone else might be an idiot not think, I thought I'd tell because it could have had severe consequences.

The other night I woke up in the middle of the night and was hungry.  I decided to have a piece of hard candy (sugar free).  The next thing I knew I was waking up again.  All of a sudden, I felt with my tongue that a tooth was loose and was wiggling in my mouth.  I thought I must be dreaming because that was where the dentist took the tooth out a few months ago.  I reached into my mouth and sure enough there was something there stuck to the gum that felt like a tooth and I wiggled it.  Then I pulled and it came out.  I must have fell back asleep while I still had the candy in my mouth lol.  I could have choked to death.  How embarrassing would it have been on my autopsy for the coroner to write "died from choking on candy while sleeping" lol.  I bet that would have even made the TV ;-)

So, here's my PSA for the day.  When eating hard candy in the middle of the night at least sit up, you probably have less of a chance of falling back to sleep or not.    Have a good day.

Saturday Centus 8

Today is Saturday Centus which we are given a prompt and then have to write 100 words relating to the prompt.  It's from Jenny Matlock's blog. My prompt is in bold.   We have all week to write it from Saturday to Saturday.  Then post a link on her blog.  Go over and read them there are some fantastic writers over there and creative ways people are going about the prompts each week.  Check it out.  Click here  Saturday Centus

The last couple of weeks I have been writing about the same character named Mary.  I don't know what travails Mary has been through but I'm trying to figure it out.  If you want to catch up go here

WEEK 8 PROMPT

"Did you notice Elizabeth in class this morning and how forlorn she seemed?" Perhaps I will write her a comforting note, I thought.

"What??", Johnny said.  " Just thinking out loud, being here reminded me of something that happened in high school" trying to cover up what I really was thinking.

"Did you ever write that note"?

From the other side of the car I heard "Look what the cat dragged back", in a chilly tone.

"Why didn't you tell anyone you were coming", ignoring Jimmy.  "I didn't want anyone to know and I'd like to keep it that way".

"That's fine for now Mary.  We'll leave you by yourself but in time you've got some explaining to do", Jimmy said.   "Thanks, brothers".

Friday random thoughts

1. At the Nursing Home there is an outside courtyard surrounded by the residents rooms.  Lately, we've been taking Mom out there.  I think only once or twice when we've been out there someone else was there too.  There are trees and when the flowers get bigger it's going to be even lovelier.  This year they put some tables out with umbrellas.  My mom always had flowers outside her home and she's enjoying going out there.  I think some birds have a nest in some of the trees because we always hear a lot of chirping when we sit out.

2.  Remember last week when I showed a picture of the green beans planted in the container looking so good - this week not so much.  The leaves are starting to turn yellow and they are looking sickly.  We're thinking maybe the container isn't deep enough.  We'll have to see what happens I guess.  The ones in the garden are still doing good.

 3.  On Wednesday there was an earthquake in Canada and some people in Northeast Ohio felt it.  We didn't though.  I remember when my son was little and we were still living in Cleveland, there was an earthquake somewhere and he was sitting at the kitchen table.  All of a sudden I felt shaking and at first I thought it was him and I told him to stop jumping around, ha, ha.  I found out it wasn't him and it was a small tremor that we felt.

4.  Dinner Friends was the best this week.  Everyone except one person showed up (her husband was in the hospital).  I had ribs, baked potato and broccoli.  It was so good.  Also, my usual 2 glasses of wine for the month  lol.   I was happy that I got to talk to everyone for a change.

5.  Our front flowers are doing weird things this year.  First off,  a violet popped up in the spring which we never planted.  I'm thinking the squirrels must have planted it or it came from a bird, lol.  My husband planted the marigolds in a nice row.   From somewhere extra ones came up in front of some of them.  This has never happened before in all the years he's planted them.  We're just leaving them where they are.  It looks odd because they are out of place but who are we to fight nature, ha. I still have to get pictures but I'm waiting until they get a little fuller.

6.  Short list this week.  Have a great weekend.

Alphabe-Thursday

For the letter W, I decided on wedding garb.

I've been in four weddings, five when you count mine.  Naturally, I've never been able to wear any of the dresses again but they weren't awful (or at least I didn't think so).

The first wedding was my cousin's and I don't have an individual picture of it.  I was pretty young.

The second wedding was the sister of the previous wedding I was in.  As you can see it was a lovely yellow dress.  Don't you just love the daisy bouquet ;-)?

Then I was in my girlfriend's wedding.  In this blue number.  At the time I loved the hood.  I thought it was very unusual. I never saw something like this before.

The last time I was a bridesmaid was when my youngest brother got married.  Me, my husband and son were all in the wedding.  Here are two pictures.  It was purple as you can see.  Although I liked the backless part of the dress, it was hard to keep the girl's up at the time as evidenced by the second picture  ;-)

These next few were from my wedding.  This first one is of me and my matron of honor ( I wore the blue hooded dress in her wedding).   This was what my bridesmaids dresses looked like.  She was the friend that I went jobbin' with, ha.  Their dresses were a peach color.

This next I wanted to show the top of my dress and the veil. I loved this dress. I also loved how the little flowers went down the whole outside of the veil  ;-)

This next one is a picture of the train.  At the reception, we just put it in a bustle.

I still have my dress up in the attic.  It's supposed to be hermetically sealed in a gold box.  I haven't seen it for years though, so I don't know if it still is, ha.

I could go on and on showing wedding pictures but I won't.    I have one last to show of the wedding cake and then I'll be done.  I don't know why but it shows up more orange but it really was more of a peachy color.

I hope you enjoyed my little trip down memory lane with some of the wedding garb I've worn over the years.

Okay, now it's time to go over to Alphabe-Thursday at Jenny's to see what others came up with for the letter W http://jennymatlock.blogspot.com/2010/06/alphabe-thursday-w.html

A Hidden Garden

This is one of my next door neighbor's flower gardens but no one really sees it because it's behind his garage.  Also, you can see there's a privacy fence at the back of his property.  It is a little bit away from our fence by our back vegetable garden. I think it's just beautiful.  I wish I could have gotten a better picture.

Many  years ago, we noticed he started digging up behind his garage.  Slowly but surely, every year he would add different things until he's had this for a few years. Do you see all those round things those are bowling balls ;-)   All we ever see him do is go back there in the spring planting the flowers and then summer, weeding.   He's been retired for years and seems the type that he always likes to be doing something.   I think that's where he get's his enjoyment from working in there making it beautiful... even if it is a hidden garden.

The Cat in the Hat

When my son was in 1st grade during Right to Read week, they had to dress as a character from a book.  We decided he would be the Cat in the Hat.  He already had the clothes.  My crafty husband made the rest.

Sex and the City & Centus

Magellan picked me up about 2:40 for the movies on Saturday.  It was supposed to start at 3:15 and we didn't know if it would be crowded and we wanted to get a good seat.

I haven't been to the movie theater for years.  I think the last movie I saw was Chicago. We went to the ticket counter and bought our tickets.  $7.50 for a matinee, WTH?  Magellan asked if that was the matinee price and the ticket girl said it was and the regular price was $9.50.  Holy Moley, how do people afford going to the movies nowadays.  I ended up buying a small bag of  Twizzlers for $4, yikes.

As were going into the theater part there was no one standing there to take our tickets.  There was a little machine there and I'm thinking maybe it's like the ATM machine and you just stick your ticket in it. I mentioned it to Magellan.   I didn't notice the scanner thing and she thinks we're supposed to pick that up and scan it.  So, she starts doing it and I say no probably we're not supposed to do that lol.  Then I notice a couple of employees and I ask them about showing our tickets and they say just go in, we didn't have to show our ticket.  Well, WTH, we could have just walked in without paying lol.

We go into the darkened theater and there's no one else in there.  We get the perfect seats right in the middle. There's only about 15 minutes until it starts and we start to think that it was pretty cool we were going to have our own private showing, ha.  We then weren't paying attention to the time and finally a couple of women came in.  I laugh and tell them about us having a private showing.  They go about 5 or 6 rows behind us.

While we are still waiting for the movie to start another woman comes in all by herself.  With all the seats in the theater where does she sit, right behind me WTH.

So now there's 5 of us.  We start talking and thinking why isn't the movie running already.  It should have started already.  They must not show previews anymore and are going to go right to the movie.

4 more woman come in and sit across the aisle from us.  It's past 3:30 and we're starting to think when Magellan called up to find out what time the movie started she must have gotten the wrong information.

All of a sudden something's coming on the screen.  We saw a half hour of previews and commercials.  When did they start showing commercials for cable TV shows at the movie theater and vitamin water? WTH

We saw the movie.  I liked it overall.  I would never dress like they do or go to those kind of places but it was a fun distraction from life.

When we left, we checked what time things were supposed to get started and it said 3:45.  So, we pretty much sat in the theater for over an hour before we actually saw the movie.  This could only happen to us, ha.

***********************************************
My Saturday Centus is not a real story. For some reason when I did Centus #6, I wrote about Mary and then couldn't forget about her.  I felt I needed to explore this more.   I've never tried to write a story and I liked the idea, as someone else is doing, of continuing a story.  Right now, I have no idea what happened to her, why she never went back home and who "he" is that still lives in town. Sorry to disappoint.   Hopefully, I'll figure it out, ha!!

Saturday Centus #7

It's time for Saturday Centus.  We are given a prompt and then have to come up with 100 words or less not counting the prompt.  You can participate until next Saturday.  So, why don't you join us.  If not try to go and read what everyone comes up with.  There are some really wonderful writer's on it.  It's at Jenny's blog.
The prompt is in bold.

Mary decided she  needed to go back to help clear things out.  Her brothers couldn't understand why she never came back.  Why would they, she thought.  I never told anyone what happened.  As I sat in front of my childhood home, I was transported back to the first time I saw him. I was coming into the house after doing my chores...

It was Fathers Day, 1984, when I heard that voice in the hallway.

The new family had come to celebrate with us. Since they came from the city, Ma and Pa were happy to show them country hospitality.

"Mar, are you all right " my brother said from outside my car.

Friday random thoughts

1.  My son's girlfriend was in town so we got to see her on Monday.  It was so nice.  We hadn't seen her since before Christmas.

2.  We're hoping our son might be coming for a visit  as well.  Although he was lucky to get a census job and is working now.  I'm not sure how long that is going to last.  In this economy and where he is living now, we are thankful that he has this at least for a little bit.

3.  Don't you just hate it when you find a blog you really like and just start reading it and then all of a sudden they decide to quit. Ugh!!

4.  Still waiting on Mom's water and sewer bill.  I called again on Tuesday.  After having to wait to talk to someone over 45 minutes, I then got transferred to another person and waited an hour for them to tell me the same thing the first person told me.  It was sent to billing and they are behind.  It's been 2 months since they did the final reading. Grrr.

5.  We're supposed to be getting some really "hot, hot" weather upper 80's and 90's.  Sheesh, it's technically not even summer yet!

6.  Monday when we went to see Mom, I noticed she had on a sweater that wasn't hers.  I looked at the label and it was the right room wrong person, it was the roommates.  I didn't say anything because I figure the roommates taken plenty of Mom's things and she would eventually get it back.  On Wednesday, Mom was still wearing the roommates sweater but this time the roommate was wearing one of Mom's sweaters, ha.

7.  Saturday, Magellan and I are going to see Sex in the City.  I think it should be fun.

8.  Next week is Dinner Friends.  Woo hoo!!

9.  Now honestly, did the congressmen think the BP guy was going to tell them anything. Seriously....Oh, and the congressman that apologized to BP for the government's "shakedown" then had to take his apology back and say that wasn't what he meant. Does anyone believe that.   Seriously....

10..  Have a great weekend unless I see you at Saturday Centus.

Alphabe-Thursday

For the letter V,  I chose the word verdict.

If anyone's ever been called for jury duty, most people I think don't like it because they have to be gone from work and lose money.  Plus, it is kind of boring if you sit around all the time and don't get on a case.

My reason for not liking it is, the verdict.  You have to figure out who is and who isn't telling the truth.  I'm sure sometimes it's perfectly obvious but there are times it is not.  Give me a good sob story and I'm with you LOL.

In 2002, I was called for jury duty for the Common Pleas Court.  I hoped and prayed that I would get a civil case and not a criminal case.  One case I was supposed to be questioned for, they picked the jury before they got to me, it was civil.  The second one I got questioned but because my husband was in a related field, they didn't pick me.  Again that was civil.  On the very last day I was supposed to serve,  which was a Friday , I got picked for a criminal trial, figures.  I had to come back on Monday, the trial was held.  It was very short as there was only a couple of witnesses and we reached a verdict quickly. Lucky for me although it was criminal, it was not something violent and there were no victims involved.

Since then I've been called to jury duty twice but it was for a local court.  Both times I had to fill out a questionnaire saying why I may not be able to serve.   I don't drive, so the first time I wrote if they could provide transportation I could come.  They never called me.  The second time was when Mom was in the hospital and I told them I would be bringing my mom here and she couldn't be left alone.  They never called me.  But they did have this time, that they provide transportation.  I like to think because of me that happened LOL.  If they send a letter again, I will go.

I know it's my civic duty and it's valuable and vital to our judicial system but I would like it a lot better if you didn't have to come to a  verdict ;-)

Go on over to Jenny's for Alphabe-Thursday and see what others came up with for their letter V http://jennymatlock.blogspot.com/2010/06/alphabe-thursday-v.html

Vegetable garden

I finally got my butt outside and took pictures of the garden.  If everything grows we're going to have cucumbers and tomatoes galore.

On the porch, my husband planted two things in containers.  Green beans and lettuce.

On the side garden next to the back porch are green beans.

3 cucumber plants

3 tomato plants

In the back garden are 8 cucumber plants

and 3 tomato plants on either side of the cucumbers.

Like I said if we have a good harvest we'll be begging for people to take them.  Unless, those pesky squirrels decide to come.   ha, ha.

bronze shoes

When my son was little, I got a pair of his shoes bronzed.  Do people even do that anymore?  I had them made into bookends.  I usually use them only as decorations though.

Univited guests

Many years ago when I was down the basement over by the furnace one day looking for something, I happened to glance up at the rafters.  These rafters were right next to where the outside porch would be and I saw something.  I almost had a heart attack and died right there on the spot.  I saw a hive..  and it was big ....inside the house.

You never saw somebody run up the steps so fast, I was like lightening.  My husband came down and looked. Sure enough, that's what it was.

Every once in a while when I was doing laundry I would occasionally see what I thought was a bee but I just figured someone let it in the house accidentally.  I didn't realize they had been taking up residency

 .
We called an exterminator and told him we had a hive in the house.  He said he would come around 10:00 p.m. which seemed weird but I guess that's the best time to get them because they are all in there. Ewww

The guy went down the basement with a flashlight and put some stuff in the hive that killed them. Then he brought the hive back up and was showing us the hive and said they were hornets.  Although luckily this time, they were dead hornets.   Talk about creepy.  Just thinking about that hive now still freaks me out  LOL.

He searched for where they were coming in and it was in the front corner of the house and the hive was in the back of the house. Those little buggers, ha.

My husband had to patch up the hole.  The following year, we still found a few hornets down the basement and we had an exterminator come and spray the whole basement.  That was that.  Thank goodness.

Saturday Centus #6

It's time for Saturday Centus.  Each Saturday Mr. Jenny at Jenny Matlock's gives a prompt and then with 100 words or less not counting the prompt we have to come up with a little story.  Go check it out. http://jennymatlock.blogspot.com/2010/06/saturday-centus-week-6.html

The prompt is in bold.
*************

Ma and Pa were gone and it was time to sell the old homestead.  As Mary looked out from her high rise city apartment at the concrete, memories came flooding back.

It’s true, the smell of freshly mowed grass can stay with you for years, for decades, so could Ma's apple pies baking in the kitchen.  She could almost see the laundry fluttering in the country breeze and the old oak tree.

For a moment, she had visions of moving back there.  Then reality set in. He was still there in town and she could never forget or forgive what he did and she trembled.  No, she couldn't go back.

Friday random thoughts

1.  How do you remember if you already told a story on your blog because I'm not the remembering type. I went through my whole blog and wrote down what stories I've told so I don't repeat.  A few times I have used things from older posts for  Alphabe-Thursday. Good thing I haven't been blogging longer.

2.  I did Flylady off and on over the years even before she was famous but always dropped out.  This week I noticed I was doing pretty good with keeping up with my house, then I realized I was doing my old Flylady routines.  I guess something must have sunk in, ha!

3. I don't know about you but I don't for a minute believe that there will not be serious consequences from the oil spill.  Whether it's the water or people's health.  They can say all they want that its going to be minimal or whatever.  They can talk all they want about other oil spills and the consequences weren't that bad.  I JUST don't believe them.

4. Why or why, can't things go smoothly for more than a couple of weeks.

5.  I had mom get a haircut this week.  She looks cute.  Something happened that upset her and it's being taken care of.  I'm waiting for the report on it to see if I'm satisfied.

6.  We've had a lot of rain so far this spring. The temperatures were pretty nice this week more like spring but I believe we're going to heat up again and have a muggy weekend.  I hate muggy lol.

7.  Every year my husband's family has a picnic.  The date has been set and I can't wait.  We haven't seen the whole family since Christmastime.  I can't wait.

8.  Does anyone notice anything different with their blogspot?  The preview button is in a different place when composing a post and also there's a new thing called design.  I guess they must be sprucing things up.

9.  I'm way behind on my blog reading, again.

10.  Have a great weekend everyone.

Alphabe-Thursday

I had two words I thought of; one was Urinetown, a musical, my son and I saw several years ago.  The thing I remembered the most about it was we liked it and it was good but nothing else about it ;-)  The second word was Undertaker. I don't have much to say about this either  but that's what I chose, ha!

When I went to elementary school, one of the girls I went to school with her father was an undertaker.  They lived upstairs from the funeral home.  The few times I went to go visit her, I had to ring a doorbell that led into a hallway.  Then I would go up a flight of stairs to where they lived.  When I would go up those steps, there would be a door off to the side.  I always felt uneasy and unnerved when I would see that door.  I always thought that was the door to where they did the embalming which was probably unlikely but I was a kid so what did I know.

That's about all I have to say on that unpredictable, unexpected, and unique subject.

Check out Jenny's site for other U words for Alphabe-Thursday.  I'm sure they will more uplifting then mine.  http://jennymatlock.blogspot.com/2010/06/alphabe-thursday-u-and-some-extra-info.html

68 years of marriage

Recently,  one of the Dinner Friends father's passed away.  He was 94 years old.  I was astonished that he and his wife were married for 68 years.  Not many people are lucky enough to be married that many years.

While I only met him once, after giving my condolences to his wife, I saw their lives through pictures and you could tell what a wonderful marriage they had.  They also played a video of when the couple was interviewed when they were married for 66 years from a local TV station.  One of the things I remembered the most that they said was that every night before they went to bed, they would kiss and say they loved each other.

Now that was true love.

By the light of the silvery moon

My husband took this picture one night when he was sitting on the back porch.

I thought it was so cool that he got the shot right between the trees. (click on the picture to get the full view)

Oops!!

One day I flushed the toilet and all of a sudden this happened,  Yikes!!  Excuse the shadow.

My husband wasn't home.  I had to take the tank top off so I could flush it.  After he got home, it looked like this but at least it could be flushed.

This was in the half bathroom.  Thank goodness now it looks good as new.  Whew!!!

Saturday Centus #5

Today is Saturday Centus.  Mr. Jenny at Jenny Matlock's gives us a prompt and then we have to write 100 words or less not counting the prompt which is in bold.  You can do it until next Saturday.  So go on over and read/write it's a lot of fun. http://jennymatlock.blogspot.com/2010/06/saturday-centus-week-5.html

What a day, I thought to myself.  After the big storm last night my electricity was out and it was already 90 degrees. As I drove out my driveway the sweat was rolling down my face. How stupid that I didn't get the car air conditioner fixed.  Everywhere in the neighborhood all I saw were downed trees and wires.

When I got to the next town, it was like the storm never came through. I noticed the small movie theater and decided to go in to get out of the heat.

I settled into the comfortable movie theater seat with awkward 3D glasses perched on my nose, a small tub of popcorn on my lap, and a bottle of water lodged into the seat holder.

Friday random thoughts

1.  Sometimes you have to make "hay when the sun shines" as they say. This past week I got a burst of energy and my whole house pretty much got cleaned. I even managed to do the inside of the fridge.  Now it matches the back, ha!

2.  I put Berta (my roomba) back to work.  I let her be AWOL for months.  I guess I thought she would just turn herself on besides vacuuming.   Since she hasn't, I started her up again.  Corky is still not thrilled with her.

3.  Last weekend, a big branch from one of our trees broke and ended up in the neighbor's yard behind us. Again another picture missed ;-() It needed to be cut off anyway but that wasn't exactly the way we wanted it done.  My husband got the part out of the neighbors yard but then had to go buy a small chain saw to cut the part off the tree.  Who knows when he'll get to that but at least it's out of the neighbor's.

4.  The garden's in and the sunflowers are planted.

5.  On Tuesday's, I decided I'm going to put a photo of something past or present and try to write only 50 words about it.  Although Saturday Centus helps limit me which I find very hard, I wanted to see if I could write something with even less words.  It's going to be called Tuesday limited.

6.  Mom's been doing pretty good.  Last Friday, she developed a cough and started with the cackling with her breathing again but it seems to have cleared up mostly.  She also seemed pretty with it mentally.  I've been able to take her outside for some fresh air which has been nice.

7.  I don't usually like to talk about this kind of stuff but Al and Tipper Gore - wow!!

8.  We bought our first cherries for the season and they were pretty good.  I love cherries.

9.  BP -GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR Enough said.

10.  Have a good weekend.

Alphabe-Thursday

Sometimes I think the more words there are for a letter, the harder it is to choose one ;-).  Anyhow I chose Trick or Treaters for the letter T.  When my son was little, we used to go trick or treating with the neighbors on the next street.  Every year, we would try to get a picture of all the kids.  I'm sure I have more but these are what I found.  I hope you enjoy them as much as I did looking at them.

                                                  My son as superman.

This next one I think he was a character from Super Mario but I'm not sure.

This was when he was a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle, if you remember them LOL

This last one I don't have an individual picture of him and I'm not sure what he was.  He's the one with the things sticking out of his head lol.

Now, check over at Jenny Matlock's to see what tremendous words people came up with for their Alphabe-Thursday.  http://jennymatlock.blogspot.com/2010/06/alphabe-thursday-t.html

Roses are Red

Last week one evening, I was sitting in the computer room reading blogs and my husband came in.  This is what he  brought me.

Its from our front rose bush.  I haven't taken any pictures yet of the flowers.  He wanted me to be able enjoy them ;-)
