For Alphabe-Thursday I chose for the letter N for Nickey, the cat - Not Nickey the monkey I wrote about in another post. Yes, I've lived with two animals named Nickey. Neither which I've named.
How we came to have Nickey was kind of nutty.
When I was at the courthouse, I worked with a girl named Hazel. Her and her family were moving I think to West Virginia. She asked if I could take care of Nickey until she could send for him. I said okay. I was already married and we took him home. That was the end of that. Never to hear from Hazel again. Ha!! I don't know if I was naive or something happened that she never sent for him. Since I didn't have an address or phone number for her I could never contact her.
He was a Russian Blue. We probably had him at least 8 or 9 years. He was de-clawed when he got him. So, needless to say he was an indoor cat.
He used to sit and look out the window all the time at the neighbor's big tree. See the picture below that's the window he looked out. One time he got out somehow and went right to that tree and got a bird. I always thought all those years he was planning his strategy if and when he ever got out, he was going to make it count. LOL and he did.
While we had him, we got our first dog, Doc. He was a mutt from someone my mom knew.
Nickey and Doc got along well. Although Nickey ruled the roost, since he was there first. They used to play together.
When my son came along, Nickey was banished to the basement for a while because I had heard the old wives tale about cats smothering infants. He was probably down there for about a year and then he was allowed back upstairs.
He was a pretty good cat. He used to play fetch with my husband.
So if by some chance you read this Hazel - what the heck happened?

That was cute! We acquired a cat with a house one time. The previous owners took her with them but she came back and they decided not to argue with her about it. When we moved out of state a few years later we kept her inside for a very long time so she wouldn't try to go back there again!
ReplyDeleteWell, I guess she just left Nicki with you. At least you kept him and took good care of him. You could have gotten rid of him.
ReplyDeleteLike Beth I also acquired a cat with a house. She doesn't let you touch her but our own cat loves her and she is a good mouser. I am a sucker for cats! I JUST LOVE THEM! That's a new one for acquiring a cat! Joni
ReplyDeleteI just got through reading your past posts, I enjoyed myself!! I'll be back to visit, and thanks for visiting me

What a lucky cat to be left with such a kind person! You are so sweet!
ReplyDeleteBest wishes,
Natasha.
thanks for sharing. :]
ReplyDeleteWonderful story of Nickey! He has a good home now with you and your family.
ReplyDeleteI know animal cruelty, neglect, and abandonment have become so commonplace when I wasn't even surprised that your person never came back for Nickey. So glad you kept that beautiful Russian blue.
ReplyDeleteAha!...another one of us who collects strays - watch it or you might find yourself with a goat or donkey.
ReplyDeleteHazel should be warned - there's a whole blogsphere that now knows this story!
I worried about our cats when our first baby came along. One of the cats would never go anywhere near the kids, and still doesn't. But my Henry, who passed away last election day, was a great babysitter. I miss him.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great story! I love the part about him getting the bird! I agree he probably planned it all along!
ReplyDeleteI have a horse named Russian with a son named Dmitri Blu...Arabian names are so screwy!
ReplyDeleteLove your n post, it amazes me every week how you come up with such great ideas!
I love cats but dogs are mote loyal
ReplyDeleteCute post. I can't imagine a cat playing fetch. Amazing.
ReplyDeleteAwwwwwwwww those pictures of them are so sweet!!! How wonderful that they got along so well.
ReplyDeleteWhat gorgeous pics! I love all animals but perhaps dogs just a bit more!
ReplyDeleteGreat post & many thanks for yr comment over at my place! *See* you next Thursday for 'O'?!!
XOXO LOLA:)
What a lovely story about Nickey. I love cats/
ReplyDeleteVery cute story. After working at a veterinary hospital for 25 years, the most important thing I've learned is to keep my hands behind my back when someone brings in a teeny, tiny kitten. The second is to microchip the OWNER when they say they will "send" for their pet - that was a joke, but I wish we could! Kathy
ReplyDeleteSounds like this little NICKI was true blessing! So Sweet!
ReplyDeleteHmmmm...Nickey rhymes with Viki or Vicki (o:
ReplyDeleteFun post to share for N and I think Nickey is the lucky one.
Fun share for N..
adorable pets and equally adorable names
ReplyDeletethanks for your visit
You are so nice to take the cat, I am not a cat person so it would have been a no for me! So nie how you helped all these animals, you must have a big heart!
ReplyDeleteMy brother in law has a Russian Blue also and he plays fetch too. I think that is the funniest thing!
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by my blog.
Thank you for taking care of Nickey. Your post was delightful.
ReplyDeletenicky was a great cat...At least Hazel made sure he had a great home!
ReplyDeleteHow Nice of you to Nurture Nicki!
ReplyDeleteWell, at least Hazel didn't just completely abandon the cat, like so many people do when they move. And you got a great cat out of the bargain.
