Alphabe-Thursday

I had two words I thought of; one was Urinetown, a musical, my son and I saw several years ago.  The thing I remembered the most about it was we liked it and it was good but nothing else about it ;-)  The second word was Undertaker. I don't have much to say about this either  but that's what I chose, ha!

When I went to elementary school, one of the girls I went to school with her father was an undertaker.  They lived upstairs from the funeral home.  The few times I went to go visit her, I had to ring a doorbell that led into a hallway.  Then I would go up a flight of stairs to where they lived.  When I would go up those steps, there would be a door off to the side.  I always felt uneasy and unnerved when I would see that door.  I always thought that was the door to where they did the embalming which was probably unlikely but I was a kid so what did I know.

That's about all I have to say on that unpredictable, unexpected, and unique subject.

Check out Jenny's site for other U words for Alphabe-Thursday.  I'm sure they will more uplifting then mine.  http://jennymatlock.blogspot.com/2010/06/alphabe-thursday-u-and-some-extra-info.html

Did you ever see the HBO show called " 6 Feet Under"? It was about a family that had a funeral home as part of their huse. It was an oddly interesting and unusual show!

Do you remember the movie My Girl? That sweet little girls dad was an undertaker and he had to burry her best friend and that still hits me where it hurts...your post brought this movie back for me...not 100% sure why but it did. I think I need to share this movie with my oldest!

My hubby told me that there was a musical of that name but I didn't believe him!

I have watched a few episodes of 6 ft under but never got into it...a bit spooky for me.

Best wishes,
Natasha.

I immediately thought of My Girl when I read your post. Are you old enough to remember that movie?

A child's imagination makes the mystery door totally UNDERSTANDABLE. I would have done the same thing.

I guess a dead body is a dead body but somehow I think satan is hanging around them and as a kid I don't think I could have visited there either. Sure wouldn't have wanted to live there!

Good Morning Ms. Viki!

Yeah, that sounds like a very creepy experience. My granddaughter has chosen than profession and I've had a thousand questions "why". But, someone has to do it! And, it takes special people for the task.

Thanks for sharing UNDERTAKER with us today. And, thanks for stopping by the farmhouse for a visit! We love having company.

Enjoy your THURSDAY!

Interesting choices for the letter u. My husband and I saw Urinetown on Broadway years ago. It was good! I didn't know what to expect and was pleasantly surprised. As for funeral homes. I grew up across the street from a funeral home. It wasn't that creepy to me. I remember the coffin room, the embalming room, and the parlors were all downstairs. The family lived upstairs. Funny that I never gave it much thought as a child. It was just where our neighbors lived. :-)

I have a thing about going up stairs and finding dead people so this would have scared me, too.

I liked this little stop on Alphabe-Thursday's letter "U" even though it did give me the willies...just a teeny, tiny bit!

Thanks for a great link this week!

A+

I had a friend in high school whose parents were undertakers. His grandmother lived above the funeral home and on Halloween they would stay at her place and watch scary movies. He grew up to be an undertaker too.

We saw Urinetown a couple of years ago - it was pretty good.
I also had a friend whose dad was an undertaker - we had fun one summer with his business cards, although he wasn't (as I recall) amused!

Vikki, I had to laugh, as I dated a guy who's family where undertakers....they lived upstairs...same thing, in fact I saw a few of these people layed out...what always confused me, is them wearing their glasses?????? LOL, sorry had to add some humor in there...great post!

One of my father's best friends was an undertaker and he terrorized my siblings and I when we went to visit.

He chased us with false teeth (they probably were his own) and told us that all of the rooms had dead bodies in them.

I forgot about that until just this minute!

Undertaker... whenever I hear this word, this is the man that comes to mind (thanks to my hubby's obsession with entertainment wrestling a while back).

I had a classmate in HS who lived above a funeral home. I always wondered how she felt about that and what it was like for her friends to visit. Great U, Viki.

It's definitely not the life for everyone, but I certainly am grateful someone is willing to do this job!

Undertaker is a job that I definitely won't ever have the guts to do..Urinetown is an unusual name for a musical.

Dear Vicki,
Thank you for visiting my U-post!

You have chosen an unusual U-word, "undertaker".

Death is a part of life. Children are often curious about death. My own children ask me lots of questions about death and I sometimes have trouble answering them. But then I remember when I was six years old and asked my father about death. He did not want to answer me, saying that I was so young that I did not have to worry about death at my age. Later on, when I was in my teens, he told me about when he was about eight years old, that a boy from his school, had fallen from a tree and died. All the neighbourhood children got together in a sort of delegation and went to this boy's home to pay their last respects. They saw him lying in his parent's parlour.

My father did not tell me this story when I was six years old. Nor did he remember it later, when I was an adult and wanted to hear it again. He had forgotten the whole story in his old age.

So I can understand the uncomfortable feelings about a child visiting an undertaker, even if I think these feelings may vary for different individuals.

I agree with Jacque, that someone has to do this kind of work, which is partly for the benefit of those who mourn the dead.

I have seen several episodes of the tv-series "Six Feet Under". But even if it compels you in to watch, I don't like it. There is a lack of love in that family. They are all cold, lonely and selfish! It leaves me with a very sad feeling.

Interesting post!

Best wishes,
Anna

Hm...I can't imagine... Urninetown? As in Urine...town?

I am also amazed at how many commenters have known friends whose family members were undertakers. I tried to think if throughout the years of moving, if I met anyone that was in the business...

Blessings & Aloha!
thank you so much for stopping by!
