49

Mary felt breathing on her face.

“Get out of her Lulu, I’m trying to sleep.”

“Meow” she heard.

When she looked she saw it was Elizabeth sitting on the floor right by her.

“You nut.”

“Are you going to get up sleepy head?  It’s already 10.”

“It is.  Wow”

“You were sleeping like a log when I came down.  I made coffee and I’ve been waiting for you to get up.  I couldn’t stand it anymore.  How did it go with Eli last night?”

“Let’s just say wonderful comes to mind when I think of it” and she smiled.

“Oh boy, spill it.”

Mary got up and said “Let me go to the bathroom first.  I’ll be right back” and she went upstairs.

When she got done and came downstairs she went in the kitchen and Elizabeth was talking on the phone.  She went and grabbed a cup of coffee.

“Jimmy will come. Thanks for calling.  Bye…” and she hung up.  “That was the funeral director.  Mitch’s ashes are ready to be picked up.”

“Oh, I’m sorry.”

“It’s okay.  I knew he would probably be calling soon.  I asked Jimmy a while ago if he would pick them up for me when the time came.  I’ll just have to call and tell him.  You’re lucky you have Jimmy.”

“I’m beginning to find that out” Mary said.

Elizabeth dialed the phone... “Hi Jimmy…  I’m doing fine…  Look I got the call from the funeral director.  Mitch’s ashes are ready to be picked up…  Anytime you want…Yes that would be great…No, take them to my house…I don’t know… Just put it on the fireplace mantle…Don’t worry about me…Thanks I’ll talk to you later.  Bye” and she hung up.

Elizabeth got up and got herself a cup of coffee and sat down.  She had tears in her eyes and Mary got up and hugged her.  “I’ll be all right.  It’s just going to take me a minute.” And they sat their quietly for a while.

“So” Elizabeth said “Take my mind off things.  What happened last night?”

“After you went to bed we finished eating.  I cleaned up the kitchen, he made a fire then we watched some comedian on TV.  Oh for part of the time he had his arm around me while we watched TV” and Mary smiled at Elizabeth.

“Then what happened “she asked impatiently.

“Well, there isn’t really a lot more to tell.  He left around 11, and I walked him out again.  We said goodbye and then I turned to go back in the house and he touched my shoulder.  I turned around and he kissed me.”

“Quick or long?"

“Oh, I would say prettyyy long.”

“I think that’s fantastic.  Did he ask you out?”

“No, but I mentioned to him how cold it’s been in here.  That’s why he made the fire. I told him I thought there might be something wrong with the furnace.  He’s going to come over today to look at it.”

“He knows about them?”

“Apparently, his dad used to work on them and showed him."

“Did you tell him about the B&B?”

“Yes I did.  He also volunteered to help with getting it ready until he has to get ready for the planting season.”

“He’s got it bad for you girl” and she sighed.

“I don’t know about that.  I do know I really like him” and she blushed.

“I’m happy for you.  He seems to be nice.  I wish I could have gotten to know him a little better last night but it seems like there will be plenty of time for that.  Did you date a lot in while you were in New York?”

“Occasionally, but never anyone long term, I never seemed to click with anyone.”

“See you had to come home to find someone.”

“Technically, he’s from California.”

“I know but it seems he is a country boy at heart.”

Mary’s phone started ringing “Hello…Yes, we’ll be here…See you then. Bye.”

Elizabeth looked at Mary.

“He’ll be here about 3.  Is there anything you wanted to do today?”

“I was thinking of calling Jody or Donna and see if they were available to take me wig and scarf shopping.  I feel pretty good today so far and I thought I should get it done.”

“I can do that.”

“Don’t you want to get all dolled up?”

“For Eli to look at the furnace? Nah, I’ll just freshen up before he comes. Really, I can take you.”

“Okay, go get dressed.  I’m already looking as good as I’m going to get for the day.  Unless you’re hungry, we can go when you’re ready.”

“I’m not really hungry.  I’ll be back in a few minutes” and Mary went to get dressed.
