Mary #54

54

Mary and Elizabeth were up the next morning early.  Elizabeth made a big breakfast and they sat together and ate.

“I called Sadie last night and told her all about the B&B.”

“How did she take it?  Was she upset?”

“I think a little at first but then she was really very happy for me.”

“What did she think about you and Eli?”

“She was happy about that too.  She has been a really good friend to me all the years I lived in New York.  I would really like to see if I could use her help once we open up the inn if she’s not employed yet.  That’s if she would even want to move here.”

“Mary once it opens, I’m really not sure how much help I’ll be.  I don’t know if I’ll still be on treatments or if I’ll even be here.”

“Don’t say that.  Of course, you’ll still be here.”

“I’m just saying.  If I can help I will but I wouldn’t want to do anything full time anyhow.  So, maybe you should mention it to her to get an idea if she would be interested.  It would be hard I think to do everything by yourself.”

“Maybe I’ll talk to her about it when she comes for Thanksgiving or when I see her in New York.”

“You’re going to New York, when?”

“I’m not sure exactly but I was thinking sometime after Thanksgiving but before Christmas.  I’ll have to go back to pack up and bring some of my stuff.  Sadie said she would help me get rid of my furniture while I’m here.”

“You should ask Eli to go with you.”

“For what?”

“I think it would be fun.  He could see where you used to live.  The city will be all decorated for Christmas.  I think it would be very romantic.”

“I don’t know about romantic but it would be fun.”

“I better get dressed.  Donna will be here soon” and she went upstairs.

Mary went up too.  She couldn’t decide what to wear.  She finally decided on jeans, t-shit and a hooded sweatshirt.  She pulled her hair up in a ponytail and came downstairs.  She looked out the front window and she could see Donna’s car pulling in the driveway.  She yelled up to Elizabeth “Donna’s pulling in the driveway.”

“Okay, tell her I’m almost ready.”

Mary opened the door as Donna got to it “Hi, Elizabeth is going to be right down.”

“Thank you” Donna said as she walked past Mary and sat on the sofa.

“Jimmy tells me that you’re going to be moving back here and turning the house into a bed and breakfast inn.  Do you think that’s wise?””

Mary at first didn’t know what to say and then “I don’t know how wise it is but I’m going to give it a try.”

Elizabeth heard what Donna had said right before she came down the steps.  When she came down she said “Donna, did Jimmy tell you about the B&B that Mary is going to have?  I gave her the idea.  I’m so excited about it.”

“Yes, he did.  I didn’t know it was your idea.  I’m sure it will be a great success if you’re involved.  We better get going if we need to be at your appointment for 10.”

“Okay, I’ll see you later Mary.”

“Bye” Donna said.

“Have fun you two.”

Mary was fuming when they left.  “Who does that Donna think she is anyhow?  Somehow I’m going to have to figure out a way to get along with her, if I want to get closer to Jimmy” she said to Lulu.

Mary saw Eli’s truck coming down the driveway.  She could feel butterflies forming in her stomach.  She thought to herself stay calm and she went to the back door.  He was getting his toolbox from the back.

Mary yelled out “Do you need some help?”

“No, I got it.”

He came in bringing the toolbox.  “It’s getting pretty warm out today.  I think we might be having Indian summer.   We lucked out, I’m going to have to turn the furnace off and wait until it cools some.”

“Oh, I didn’t know.  Do you want some coffee while you wait?”

“Yeah that will be good.  I’ll be back in a few minutes.”

Mary decided to make a whole new pot.  She threw out the old coffee and rinsed out the pot.  She put in new coffee grounds and turned the pot on.  When she turned around Eli was looking at her from the basement doorway

“Has anyone ever told you that you’re beautiful?”

“Not recently” she said as she blushed.

“I knew the moment I saw you on the front porch that first day, there was something special about you.  Mary I’m falling in love with you” he said as he came closer.

“I am too” she said right before their lips met.
