Alphabe-Thursday

For G I came up with Gambling. It was the only thing I could think of.

I'm not very much of a gambler.  I've been to a casino once and that was in Canada.  I had gone on a bus trip with some friends to see The Phantom of the Opera.  Before we hit the border at Niagara Falls to cross over to America, we went to Casino Niagara.  We stayed a few hours.  I played the cheap slot machines. I had a great time.

For years, my husband used to play this one particular game in our State lottery.  I forget what the name of it was because we don't have it anymore.  Every week though he would play the same numbers.  He would always play them because we would say "if we don't play and those numbers come up after all these years we'd have to kill ourselves"  Of course, we were just kidding; kind of ;-)  Finally, that game ended and then the State went to Mega Ball.  Now unless it's over 100 million he doesn't play.  I guess we're choosier now.  I think we might even get Powerball soon.  We very rarely play the instant tickets.  I think they do a good business because we see people come out of the store and then gleefully scratch them off in the vehicle, not even waiting to get home.

For many years some people have wanted casino's in Ohio but the majority did not.  In all those years, casinos have been coming to other states surrounding Ohio.  Finally, last year they were able to get a vote from the people to put four casino's in Ohio.  It always seemed rather hypocritical to me that we were allowed to have horse racing, the lottery and church bingo but somehow casino gambling - not so much.  To me it's all gambling, and why should people go to surrounding states to spend their money (no offense to surrounding states ;-)  I guess only time will tell if it will be good or bad for Ohio.  I know I will go at least once to check it out and look forward to it.

Hello!
g - gambling.
not sure how your state breaks down the lottery income....
here they publish it once a month.
apparently it is a big money maker for the state. the amount is pretty staggering.

well, :) if you play, i wish you luck! :) i am sure your state awaits your ticket purchase :) lol

I'm one of those people with so little luck, I'd be just as likely to win the lottery as I would be to win money if I flushed it down the toilet.

But they always say, "You gotta be in it to win it."

We are having a lot more casinos opening up here in Pennsylvania. My husband is trying to get an accounting type job at one of them. It would be nice if he got it. Somehow, the recession never seems to hurt casinos.
I used to like to go to bingo with my mom when I was little.

You're right...gambling is gambling. Video gambling is allowed on the Indian Reservations here in NC and they implemented the lottery. We call it an unfortunate tax on poor people.

Great post. My one and only gambling trip to Vegas was pretty dumb.

My husband and I were there ... business for him...room service/bubble baths and a stack of books for me.

I found some nickels in the bottom of my purse and went and played the nickel slots AND I won.

I had two great big cups full of nickels and I proudly showed my husband and he said something like "isn't that about six dollars worth of nickels?"

Sigh.

Maybe.

But still...you'd think he's have been amazed seeing so many nickels at one time.

But he wasn't.

G reat post, though! I've gone to one of those casinos in Ohio but it was for lunch and not gambling.

A+

Great post! I don't play the lotteries. I've watched my brother spend an enormous amount of money to get so little in return that I just don't play!

interesting topic ... gambling ... good revenue for the state/province ... but not really good in so many other ways .... me, given the opportunity i would rather shop than gamble ...

I'm not much of a gambler myself. I go to the casino with the girls sometimes but usually end up sitting and drinking the free drinks because I've such a tight wad and I have a short attention span! :)

The only game I play at the Casino is the slot machine. :) It's the only thing I know how to play. Guess I'm not much of a gambler. Good G word!

I am a pre-k teacher and in our state(tennessee) this program as well as the hope scholarship ( college tutition) is paid for by the lottery. I am glad that i get 2,000 to pay for my son's college and I love my job working with at-risk children but I only hope that people play wisely and I don't think they do. I went to Reno once and went downstairs and played the slots, I had 20 dollars and won 200. I have also played the machines on a cruise and won zero. I can stop but so many folks can't. Don't really know how i feel.

Great G post. Good points about gambling being gambling. I think the last time I gambled I was in Las Vegas for a wedding. I was in my early twenties, my husband was in school and I had two little babies. I had twenty dollars in my purse that I had tucked away for an emergency-- and blew it in like, two minutes. Then I just felt dumb thinking about what I could have done when that money...

there is no gambling in Utah because it is so into the LDS church....I like to go to the casinos more for the entertainment than the gambling....I get bored easily.....I like to dream about winning the lottery though and if I go out of state, I usually buy a ticket......

The only time I've ever Gambled was in Vegas - just the slots mind, but it was fun for a few days!

My one and only trip to Vegas was in 1985. I know Vegas has changed a lot since then, but I really have no interest to return. Have to say that we did win on the slots that trip. We won enough to pay for our visit. But luck doesn't last, so we stopped while ahead. Great G post!

I'm not much of a gmbler either Vikki. I've been to Las Vaegas twice but I only played the slots for about a half hours. I liked walking around and looking at all the hotels and shopping. Same with Atlantic City ...not as much glamor as Las Vegas but oftennthey have good shows and big name concerts.

I have never been to Vegas or to any of the local casinos. I'm just not the gambling type. My husband does buy lottery tickets every once in a while.

I have no problem with people who want to go and have a fun evening or weekend, and they budget a specific amount of money for playing games on the "boats". (Casinos here have to be on the water)

BUT, I do think it is a problem when people go in and spend every dollar they own, and then have no way to take care of their children.

It's all about personal responsibility isn't it?

Gambling, huh? California has the lottery, which is supposed to go to our schools, but they're closing right & left. Then we have a ton of indian casinos.
I grew up in Lake Tahoe where the casinos are on the Nevada stateline. It used to be such fun gambling before I was 21, acting old.
Thanks for dropping by!
